The Amazon if it is not the longest river of the world , is without any largest doubt, the river which takes its source in the Andean lake of Lauricocha pours with its mouth, the Atlantic Ocean, about the quarter of fresh water of planet. Amazonia, which requires a tour operator or Lodge to discover it, is a vast natural greenhouse sheltering more than 10 million forms of life: 2.500 fish species, 50.000 species of higher plants and an infinite number of insects. The Amazon drains an immense basin of 8 million km², and crosses several countries of Latin America - Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil. It formerly nourished a population of four million Amerindians.
Belém with its parks, its bandstands out of wrought iron, its buildings arts déco and its avenues bordered of mango trees, kept intact its elegance of formerly. It is today a town of a million inhabitants, located on southern bank of the river, to 145 km of the ocean.
Belém is the door of the Amazon. Ilha de Marajó, with the mouth of the river, is larger than Belgium, but counts only 200.000 inhabitants, fewer than the hordes of buffaloes which live in the marshes of the north of the island. It kept some vestiges of its past but these are especially the superb beaches which made its reputation.

French tiles, marble of Vérone, ironwork of England, glosses of Murano. The ceiling was painted in France before being brought in entirety to Manaus.
Unfortunately Teatro Amazonas knew only one very short period of glory: between 1896, date of its inauguration, and 1910, date on which the Brazilian ones heard for the last time an opera in the jungle. The fall of the courses of rubber making flee all the large grower. The travel agencies from the city propose all of the programmes of excursions for the day in order to discover the universe of the drill Amazonian with its gigantic trees, its long lianas, its giant water lilies and its crocodiles.
In full jungle, a certain number of hotel propose programs of discovered of the surrounding fôret or excursions some three days to one week in boat with different level from comfort. In the south of São Gabriel de Cachoeira, accessible in boat or the plane, is Pico de Neblina, the highest mountain of Brazil (3.000 m).
Rio Branco sprinkles the state of Roraima which is most septentrional of Brazil. This state is the last unknown fragment of Latin America. It is consisted the valley of the river, framed by a whole of tightened of which highest culminates with nearly 3.000 m, and constitutes a natural border with Venezuela.
