THE NORTH
OF THE PATAGONIE
Patagonie corresponds to the southernmost part of the South
American continent, it includes portions of Argentina and
Chile. The mountainous and vast slopes flat which extend to
the east from the watershed from the Atlantic find in Argentina,
whereas Chile controls the long one and much narrower band
which separates the mountains from the Pacific Ocean, at this
point compressed by the fjords, the mountains and the fields
of ice that displacements by overland route prove practically
impossible on most of the territory concerned.
The weak density of the population and the rudimentary state
of the highway network in addition contribute to cause an
impression of insulation there one cannot more marked.
Coihaique is an attractive small town from which one devotes
oneself to a whole panoply of activities, in particular the
high-sea fishing, the hiking and the exploration of the fjords
and glaciers.
This part
of Chile contains two immense fields of ice, Campo de Hielo
Norte (4400 km ²)
and the campo of Hielo On (13500
km ²).
The Andins peaks conceal moreover good number of high volcanos
whose majority are covered with ice. Under the influence of
the marine currents, the climate is done generally wet and
fresh (averages of 7°C to 9°C), though seldom very
cold.
THE CUS
OF THE PATAGONIE
This ground of mountains and glaciers, channels and fjords,
forests and breedings of sheep, close to thousands of uninhabited
islands, to lie, isolated from all, beyond the last cuttings
off of civilization.
It is only since the blaze of the worldwide markets of wool
at the end of the 19 éme century that the south of
Patagonie started to become populated to a significant degree.
Before that, one found there primarily only one handle of
tiny scattered communities of Amerindians of which there remain
today only well few descendants.
Patagonie is not the exclusive fact of Chile. Its Argentinian
portion, appears even broader, more punt and cleaner with
the human settlement, it does not remain about it less than
Patagonie Chilienne is haloed of a beauty seldom equalized
on the surface of the sphere.
The agglomerations in the south of Patagonie are Puerto Natales,
whose population is established with some 20.000 inhabitants,
Porvenir with the Western point of the main island of Tierra
del Fuego, and Puerto Williams, on the island of Navarino,
the point more in the south of the Earth to being inhabited
permanently.
The tourist
attraction by far most important is Parks it Nacional Torres
del Paine, honoured with covered with snow summits, lakes
and more spectacular glaciers the ones than the others. But
well of others discovered still await you, that they are the
colonies of penguins to be visited, of panoramic cruisings
on the ship canals, of the gauchos (cow-boys) keeping their
herds as at old times, of the excellent occasions of fishing
or the delicious feeling which the fact gets of finding itself
at the end of the world.
The infrastructures of reception however anything primitive,
since one with did not envisage comfortable hotels and tourist
complexes, just as easily that a set of places of lodging
at low price and houses of fishing distant from all.
