Cartago, the old capital until 1823, could not preserve its historical importance due to many the earthquake. In the downtown area, some sober houses, for the wood majority, passed from generation to generation.
The basilica Our-injury-of-Angels whose external frontage is a Romance mixture of the styles, Gothic and Byzantine is worth especially for the interior covered with invaluable wood.
It is here that is exposed the statue of the black virgin discovered in 1635 by a young Indian at the edge of a brook.
Each year, August 02, takes place a pilgrimage in the honor of the black virgin to which miracles are allotted.
Close to the basilica is the ruins of the parish church, which never was not finished. These ruins are in the center of a pretty garden, where one can slacken and observe the everyday life.
- the botanical garden Carlos Lankerter, located in the locality of Dulce Numbers, is composed of forest and garden on a surface of 10 ha. One of the interests of the garden is due in these 800 species of orchises proposed to the public.
