RIOBAMBA

Capital
of the province of Chimborazo, Riobamba is with nearly 200
km in the south of Quito and to 300 m in the north of Cuenca,
at an altitude of 2700 Mr. According to annals' of the history,
the city was founded by Diego de Almagro in 1534. However,
in 1797, a powerful seism entirely shaved the city, which
was rebuilt thereafter to approximately 25 km in the east
of its original site: Cajabamba. Riobamba profits from an
interesting geographical position, because it is surrounded
of splendid tops with, inter alia, the most volcano of Ecuador,
the Chimborazo volcano, which culminates to 6310 Mr. Of other
tops, not less interesting, are joined together in the national
park Sangay, who gathers the Sangay volcano and the Altar
volcano, which will fill waitings of the amateurs of alpinism.
In addition,
a walk through the streets of Riobamba brings back the travellers
earlier a hundred years and leaves with the spirit the memory
living of a rich city of its colonial past and with the
undeniable charm. The travellers also go to Riobamba with
an aim of taking the train which will take them along until
Chanchan.
