Guatemala
is located in Central America, with the limit of Mexico in
North and the West, of El Salvador and Honduras in the South
East and Belize in Western North.
The country is bordered by the Caribbean Sea in Western North
and by the Pacific Ocean in the South.
The prevalent landscape is mountainous and wooded. A chain
of volcanos rises on the high grounds of the South, with broad
of the Pacific. Three of them are still active.
The majority of the population live in the valleys of the
area of the volcanos.
The area is irrigated by several rivers which emerge in the
Pacific and the Caribbean Sea. In one of the valleys in the
West of the capital the river does not have an exit on the
Ocean and forms a lake called Atitlan, which is surrounded
by volcanos.
To Western North, close from the border with Belize and Mexico,
the plate of El Pelén extends on 36 300km², this
zone is characterized by a thick, wild vegetation and is practically
inaccessible. The zone covers nearly a third of the Guatemalan
territory but is practically uninhabited with a population
of 40.000 inhabitants.
