In the middle
of the tropical forest, the Maya ruins of Palenque are located
at 8 km of the city of the same name. This mysterious site drawn
up within a framework enchanter offers the most beautiful achievements
out of stone or stucco of pyramidal architecture and the Maya
statuary. If the site were occupied as of 1500 front J. - C.
it knew prosperity only in VIIe and IXe century after J. - C.
the buildings are characterized by surmounted of attic windows
and decorated roofs very beautiful reliefs in stucco.
The most
imposing temple of the inscriptions and highest and of the
site. It is about a pyramid built on eight levels, at the
top of which a small temple is drawn up. The archaeologist
Alberto Ruiz Lhuillier discovered there in 1952 a heavy stone
which sealed a staircase of 22 m being inserted in the middle
of the pyramid and outcome in an arched room, occupied in
his center by a calcareous plate carved of 2 m out of 3 Mr.
Under this flagstone which weighed four tons, a sarcophagus
contained the remainders of priest-king Pakal, carrying a
mask in mosaic and surrounded by many jade jewels. These vestiges
and fall to it reconstituted were transferred to the museum
from Anthropology from Mexico City. The walls of the sanctuary
with gantry are covered with engraved flagstones limestones
of innumerable glyphes.
El Palacio
(the palate), built on the esplanade of 100 m out of 80 meters,
is an architectural whole made up of a tower on four floors,
which was perhaps used as astronomical observatory, surrounded
by patios, buildings and galleries whose interior walls in
stucco are decorated with mysterious character.
At the north of Palacio, one put at the day a play of ball
is a whole of temples.
Palenque still holds many treasures with the archaeologists,
only 10% of the buildings having been put at the day.
Two other
great Maya sites of Chiapas are also worthy of interest, it
is about Yaxchilan and Bonampak which are in the middle of
the tropical forest.
