dates of the history of Panama
November 21, 1821 Panama obtains its independence by forming part
of Large Colombia.
1831 At the time of the bursting of the civil war néo-grenadine,
Panama separates during more than one year of the New Grenade,
with the intention to form a Colombian Confederation, by maintaining
its autonomy.
1855 The state of Panama is created, federated with the New Grenade
(current Colombia).
1846 The Mallarino-Bidlack treaty signed between Washington and
Bogota authorizes the United States to build a way of railroad.
November 3, 1903 Panama with the support of the United States
declares its independence and is recognized as independent République
(except Colombia which recognizes it only in 1921.
1903 The construction of the channel starts and the canal zone
of Panama becomes an American protectorate.
1914 The channel is finished and it is considered at that time
the "eighth wonder of the world".
1968 A military coup d'etat carries out the General Omar Torrijos
Herrera to the capacity and it will remain there until its death
in 1981.
1983 New modification of the constitution, after those of 1904,
1941, 1946, 1972.
Between 1984 and 1989 The country is directed by the armed forces
directed by the Manual General Noriega.
1989 Intervention of the Americans in Panama.
1991 and 1992 Several attempts at coup d'etat fail.
1992 Noriega is extradited and judged in the United States. It
will be condemned to 40 years of prison.
1999 American withdraws canal zone (according to the agreement
negotiated between the Panamanians and the administration of Jimmy
Carter in 1980).
