Eminent Spanish ecclesiastic who succeeds in conquering many indigenous tribes peacefully, thanks to his Christian example. Bishop of Chiapas as from 1544, it was indignant at the brutal treatment at Spanish towards the Indians. Of return in Spain, he became the defender of the Indians and even managed to persuade the king to take decrees granting certain civil laws to them.
